New Englanders are fanatic about their ice cream. One could say it is a regional obsession. As soon as the weather warms and the flowers begin to bud, we begin our journeys to old and new favorites. Here is a list of some favorite ice cream places and why. There are some well known places here but also some real hidden gems – Let your Summer Mecca begin!
Erikson’s Ice Cream
12 Great Road in Maynard MA (on the Stow line).
Erikson’s has been a family favorite of people in Stow, Maynard and surrounding towns since the 1930’s. It is the go to place after many a soccer, baseball or lacrosse game.
Most beloved flavor? Buttercrunch! They also have a special dog ice cream so bring your furry friends!
Kimball Farm: Original & largest location in Westford, also in Carlisle and Lancaster
Kimball Farm is known for it’s excellent ice cream and overwhelmingly enormous portions. They also have sundaes and banana splits that are equally huge.
The Westford location has pitch and putt golf, mini golf, bumper boats, batting cages and more every year. A fun family excursion. Look for the cruise nights too if you love cars!
Rota Spring Farm 117 Chace Hill Road, Sterling (near Lancaster and Clinton)
Exceptionally well made ice cream, great flavors and a beautiful farm setting! I highly recommend this place for a lovely drive and great experience! It’s fun to eat your ice cream while gazing on the cows that produced the milk for that ice cream!
New City Microcreamery 28 Main Street, Hudson, MA
A very different ice cream experience! Their flavors are innovative, interesting and delicious! In addition to many traditional flavors (made with their own twist), you can sample flavors like Baklava, Vanilla Tarragon, and Fennel Pistachio. Scroll down on the link to see a snapshot of their flavors (they do change often).
Bedford Farms 18 North Road, Bedford MA (also 2 other locations)
Located in historic New England towns – Bedford, Burlington and Concord, MA – Bedford Farms offers over 60 flavors of fresh made, locally sourced ice cream, frozen yogurt and soft serve. A beloved local treasure!
Goss Farm Ice Cream 446 Pleasant Street Dunstable, MA
A great place to go in the summer and Fall. They have great ice cream, lots of great activities for families and kids and in the fall a great maze! When the temperatures rise and you want to cool off with the creamiest of ice creams head over to Goss Farm. All made with Tully Farms milk in Dunstable! (PS – I went to school and was friends with George Tully)
Johnson’s Dairy Bar (and restaurant) 164 Boston Road (Rt 119) Groton MA
I grew up in Groton and it was always a treat to stop at Johnson’s. On the last day of school, the school bus always stopped here with everyone. Well flavored traditional ice cream that is creamy and wonderful. A great place to stop on a beautiful country drive!
Spruce Pond Creamery, 370 King Street, Franklin MA
Homemade ice cream, innovate flavors and a great setting. Delicious! I hear tell that their pizza is a knock out too!
JJ’s Ice Cream Shoppe, 157 Milford St, Upton, MA
Great ice cream, sundaes, sorbet, and sherbet. Plenty of shaded picnic table seating to enjoy it. Family run business. They have over 50 homemade flavors to choose from.
Uhlman’s Ice Cream, 232 East Main Street, Westboro, MA
Uhlman’s Ice Cream Stand serves soft-serve ice cream and fat-free soft and hard yogurt as well as at least 60 different flavors of hard ice cream.
Today, Uhlman’s sells more than frozen ice cream and yogurt. We also have frozen lemonade and frozen lime rickeys, old fashioned ice cream soda’s & floats, dairy free & allergy friendly options and hot dogs & chips at lunch.
(Closer to the city, mostly Northwest)
Rancantores –1752 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington (also Belmont and Newtonville)
Lots of interesting flavors and great service.
Toscaninis – 899 Main Street, Cambridge
Often named Best of Boston, Toscanini’s is a must try if you are in Cambridge in the summertime! Lots of great flavors made with excellent ingredients.
Cedar Hill Dairy Joy, 331 North Ave, Weston
Javaberry, creamsicle, orange, raspberry and coffee soft serve, chocolate dipped cones, orange freezes, traditional shakes (made with soft serve). All soft serve, all delicious!

Abbott’s Frozen Custard, 934 Great Plain Ave, Needham
There are very few places in the state of Massachusetts that sell true frozen custard. This store originated in Rochester NY and I have heard that frozen custard is all rage in the midwest too. And it’s completely different than ice cream or frozen yogurt. You have to try it!
